Don’t get conned into handing over cashWe wrote about a typical domain name scam a couple of weeks ago. Since then, a couple of people in the office have been targeted, so we thought we’d revisit the subject in a bit more detail.

Generally, domain scams are tricks to get you to part with money, your domain, or even both. At the very least, they are a headache.

But if you rely on your website for business, they can be much more than that: if you lose control of your domain, the impact of having to change your site’s address can cost you money. Because of this, it’s worth learning how to spot the scams. Here are the three most common.

The urgent letter in the post

This ploy uses an official-looking letter to coerce you into transferring your domain to a different registration company.

  • How does it work?
You receive a letter through the mail (they use the post because it seems more official) informing you that your domain name is due to expire. These letters often have titles like ‘Domain name expiration notice’, and encourage you to renew your domain.

The notice creates a sense of urgency, often by warning that ‘failure to renew your domain name by the expiration date will result in a loss of your online identity’. However, if you reply, you would not only be renewing your domain - you’d also be transferring it away from your current registrar.

1. Giving up after a couple of months because they aren’t ranked #1 on Google
Unless you are in a completely competitor free niche (try typing in “monkey shine on tree” in to Google!) your site will take time to be crawled by the search engine’s spiders, linked to by other sites and ranked high enough on a search engine to be found. Be realistic with your expectations.

2. Thinking building a website is a quick and easy affair
You can certainly get something up and running in a matter of minutes, whether that site will be attractive and/ or informative enough for repeat visits is debatable. Even the most simple of sites takes time and effort to get right. Don’t give up when you find an entire day had just disappeared and you still haven’t published the site!

3. Writing new content for the sake of it
You have heard search engines like updated content so you write new material each day hoping it will get your site ranked higher. if you genuinely have something to say, great, but this is such a minor consideration amongst all the other factors search engines use, your energy can be better spent elsewhere e.g. adding analytics tracking, tweaking the navigation, generating links, reading relevant blogs…

As you might know, 123-reg has a parent company. Until earlier this week, the parent company was called Pipex Communications Ltd. However, on Tuesday it changed its name to GX Networks.

The reason the name has changed is that Pipex Broadband, which also used to be a part of our company, was sold to Tiscali last year.

The change isn’t actually a big one. For us it’s meant having to find where we mention Pipex on our website and changing each one to ‘GX Networks’. We’re also getting some nice new signs made for outside the office.

If you’re one of our customers, you’ve probably seen the Pipex name on emails we’ve sent you - invoices, renewal reminders, that sort of thing. From now on, the GX Networks name will replace Pipex on these communications.

You’ll also see that the footer of our website contains the new name, and any charges to your debit or credit card may appear on your statements as being paid to GX Networks.

But apart from that, nothing else is changing: 123-reg will continue to be called 123-reg. You can continue to find out about our products and services on our main site, and get help and support (as well as contacting us) from our support site.
