I’ve been helping staff around the office with our new blog toy and something that’s cropped up is the way people use ‘click here’ links.

Example:

Whilst this won’t break your website, it is bad practice, and here’s why:

It doesn’t describe the link

Web surfers like to know what a link is going to do before they click on it. You can put <a>any text</a> between anchor tags - so use something meaningful that describes the content you’re linking to.

Surfers don’t read they scan

Surfers rarely read web pages from start to finish, instead they’ll scan a page looking for highlights. Link text stands out way more than plain text but ‘click here’ all by itself doesn’t say much about the link.

Accessibility

This is about making the web available to everyone, and blind surfers use screen readers that read web pages out-loud. This software scans pages by reading out just the titles and links - this is great for summarising web pages but ‘click here’ links will be read out in a long list and will appear completely out of context.

One of life’s irritations is when you buy something new, only to find if you had waited one more day you would have got a discount or a free gift with it.

So our existing Hosting and InstantSite customers don’t miss out, if you currently have one of the following packages, you can now claim a free ÂŁ30 Google advertising voucher through your control panel:

  • InstantSite Plus
  • InstantSite Pro
  • Hosting Starter Plus
  • Hosting Starter Pro

To claim your free ÂŁ30 Google AdWords vocuher, simply go to your control panel special offers page, and you will see a Google logo has appeared. Click on the link to get your voucher, and an email will be sent to your registered email address with your code and instructions on how to use it.

“I have free Google and Microsoft advertising vouchers, but why bother using them? I get free traffic through the search engine listings anyway, and I advertise in leaftlets / magazines / the Yellow Pages.”

That’s a common question, and on the face of it, it does seem to be a no brainer. However, if we start to look at this in more depth we will see why so many companies and websites spend so much advertising on the major search engines. Hopefully after reading this you will feel more confident about entering the world of search engine pay per click (SEPPC) advertising.

Domain transfer made easy!

Below are some useful tips to make your domain transfer to 123-reg as easy as possible:

Log into your 123-reg control panels’ domain transfer page and check through the following details in order for your transfer to be completed!

  • Update your admin contact email associated with your domain name, as all transfer confirmations will be sent to this address.
  • For all .uk domains, ask your domain name provider to change your IPS Tag to 123-REG. Once done, visit the transfer page in your control panel and update the status of your domain transfer.
  • For a .cc, .eu .info, or .name domain name, you need to ask your domain name provider to unlock your domain for transfer. You’ll then receive further instructions from our domain supplier TuCows letting you know what to do next.
  • For a .biz, .com, .info, .net, or .org domain name, you’ll need to ask your domain name provider to unlock your domain for transfer, and also send you the authorisation code (Auth Code). You’ll then receive an email from our domain supplier TuCows asking you for this code.
  • Please allow up to 24 hours for your email from TuCows to arrive. These emails (and the website they direct you to) will take a different format from your usual 123-reg emails. But don’t worry – they’re genuine, and a necessary part of the transfer process.
  • For all other domains, ask your domain name provider to change your billing handle to I6467. Next, visit the transfer page and update the status of your domain transfer.
  • Internal transfers or transfers from WebFusion, Donhost or Supanames do not qualify for a free shared hosting account.

Read our complete domain transfer guides.

How to use your free Google Adwords & Microsoft adCenter advertising

Search engine pay per click (SEPPC) advertising is so popular because your adverts are only shown when someone is searching for your product or service and you only pay when some one clicks on your advert. Creating an account and getting your adverts online is really easy, and you can be up and running in a few hours.

SEPPC budgets are also very easy to control. By setting a monthly budget you decide how much you want to spend and the search engines will make sure you will not go over this limit.

This starter guide will help you set up your Microsoft adCenter and Google AdWords accounts along with tips and ideas on how to write and target your adverts. In future posts we will go in to more detail about areas such as

  • Keyword research
  • Writing advert copy
  • Customer targeting
  • Bidding strategies
  • Increasing conversion rates (making more sales, sign ups…)
  • Tracking
